The grain is what keeps the burner level and the flame even.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eArctic White has a grain of 0.1 to 0.3 mm, Volcano Black a grain of 0.4 to 0.8 mm. Both are chosen for how they sit and how they take the light.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIt is part of the build that is tested to EN 16647, the European standard for bioethanol fires used indoors. The sand bed is one reason the base stays cool to the touch.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIt does not burn, does not smell and does not break down. Most people top up or replace it once a season.
