At glør Design, we, like many were counting down the days until spring – the long, dark winters feeling like a season to endure rather than embrace. As the warmth and light faded, life seemed to pause, leaving us in a cycle of waiting for brighter days.

A New Perspective on Winter

During our search for a better way to live through these darker months, we noticed something different in northern cultures. Despite the harsher conditions, people didn’t retreat or wait for the sun to return. Instead, winter was celebrated — a season to slow down, gather with loved ones, and find beauty in the stillness and warmth indoors.

The Elemental Power of Fire

As we explored what made winter feel so different in the north, one element stood out: fire. More than just a source of heat, fire became a ritual that brought light to the darkest days and warmth to the coldest spaces. There’s something primal in the way fire soothes the mind and brings people together. It creates a sense of balance, offering both physical warmth and emotional grounding, making winter less a season to endure and more an opportunity for reflection and renewal.

Making the Fire Experience Accessible

We set out with a clear goal: to make this transformative experience of fire available to modern life. Our design needed to be both highly functional and elegant, offering the same sense of warmth, calm, and connection that fire naturally brings to any space. We envisioned a fireplace that embodied the full sensory experience — its calming presence, its beauty, and its ability to gather people together.

Our commitment to crafting fireplaces that go beyond function led us to Norway in search of a material that reflects the rugged beauty and authenticity of Scandinavian nature.

This journey took us to Larvik, a scenic town on Norway’s south coast, known for its striking Larvikite stone. We chose Larvikite not only for its unique beauty — its shimmering crystals reflecting the natural light — but also for its deep connection to Norwegian heritage.

Quarried exclusively in this region, Larvikite embodies the resilience and purity of the Nordic landscape. In Larvik, we found the perfect element to infuse into our designs, bringing a piece of Norway’s natural wonder into every fireplace.

During our time in Larvik, we met Thor, a local craftsman who became our guide and now proudly supplies us with our Larvikite. With his deep connection to nature, passion for craftsmanship, and commitment to community, Thor shared not only the beauty of Larvikite but also the rich cultural heritage of Norway. His warmth and authenticity mirrored the very values we seek to reflect in glør Design.
