Start here — the six questions everyone asks
Is it really safe to light indoors?
Yes — and not on our word alone. LA\VIK is independently certified to EN 16647, the European standard for indoor bioethanol fires, at an accredited laboratory. It passes independent tests for spill resistance, tip-over stability, surface temperature, emissions, thermal-shock glass and safe extinguishing. It is a real flame, engineered and lab-verified to live safely inside your home.
Do I need to open a window?
LA\VIK needs no chimney and no flue. But like any real flame it uses a little oxygen and gives off mostly water vapour and CO₂, so treat it exactly as you would a group of candles: a normally ventilated room is all it needs, and it is good practice to air the room now and then. You do not need a draught or a permanently open window — just a room that breathes as any living room does.
Does it give off heat?
A gentle, radiant warmth — think of the glow of around 30 candles burning at once (about 20 for the Studio). It will take the chill off a corner and warm the space immediately around it, but LA\VIK is designed for atmosphere, not as a replacement for your heating.
How long does one fill last, and what does it cost to run?
One fill of the sealed burner lasts up to 3 hours on the LA\VIK and up to 2 on the Studio — a whole long evening. Every litre burns for up to 12 hours, so a 6-litre bottle of bioethanol is around 72 hours — roughly 24 evenings by the fire, about €2 an evening. No standing costs, no power, no maintenance bills.
Is it safe around children and pets?
It is built with them in mind: a heavy, low-set steel-and-Larvikite base that will not be knocked over, a sealed burner that cannot spill if it is bumped, and a base and glass that stay cool to the touch. That said, it is genuine fire — so, exactly as with candles, keep little hands and curious paws at a sensible distance and never leave any open flame completely unattended. The included snuffer lets you light and extinguish it from a comfortable distance.
Where do I get the bioethanol, and can I use any brand?
We sell our own de-scented glørFlame bioethanol, with an optional refill plan delivered to your door. LA\VIK also runs on any quality standard bioethanol, so you are never locked in. We simply recommend a high-purity fuel — cheap, watery ethanol is what gives the category its reputation for smell.
Safety & using it indoors
Why is an open flame indoors safe with LA\VIK?
Because the risk has been engineered out of every part and then independently verified. Five systems work together — a sealed, spill-proof burner, a heavy tip-resistant base, a cool-touch VentraCore base channel, thermal-shock borosilicate glass, and controlled lighting and extinguishing — and together they earn the EN 16647 indoor certification that most inexpensive burners never reach.
Does it produce carbon monoxide? Is it toxic?
Like any real flame — including candles and a gas hob — combustion produces mostly water vapour and CO₂, plus trace by-products. LA\VIK emissions were tested under EN 16647 to stay within the strict indoor-air limits for a closed room. Light it in a normally ventilated room and air the space now and then, and you are well within safe limits.
What actually comes out when bioethanol burns?
Predominantly water vapour and a small amount of CO₂ — no smoke, no soot and no ash to sweep or vent. That clean burn is the whole reason a real flame can sit on your table without a chimney.
How much clearance does it need above and around it?
Give the flame open air: keep a generous clear space above it and keep anything flammable — curtains, shelves, textiles, low ceilings — well away from the top and sides. Your included manual lists the exact tested minimum distances; when in doubt, more space is always better. Never place it directly beneath a shelf or in an enclosed nook.
Do I need to worry about my smoke or CO detector?
In normal use LA\VIK will not trigger a household smoke alarm — there is no smoke. As with any home that has open flames, a working CO detector is sensible general practice, and we would always encourage keeping your detectors in good order.
Can I use it in a passive or very airtight house?
Yes — with a little more attention to airing. Very airtight homes exchange less air on their own, so air the room periodically while the flame is lit, and consider a CO monitor if you run it for long stretches. Treated like candles in the same room, it is perfectly at home in a modern build.
What if it gets knocked over?
The base is deliberately heavy and low so it resists being tipped by a passing child or pet. And because the burner is sealed rather than an open pool of fuel, the bioethanol stays contained even if the fireplace is bumped or tilted — there is no sloshing reservoir to spill or flare.
The fuel & running it
What does it burn?
Bioethanol — a pure, plant-based alcohol distilled from renewable crops. It is the one fuel that makes a genuine open flame clean enough to live with indoors, because it burns to water vapour and CO₂ rather than smoke and soot.
How long does a fill last, and how far does a bottle go?
Up to 3 hours per fill on the LA\VIK, up to 2 on the Studio. Every litre burns for up to 12 hours, so a 6-litre bottle is around 72 hours — roughly 24 evenings, about €2 per evening.
Where do I buy fuel, and am I tied to your brand?
You are never tied in. We sell our own de-scented glør Classic bioethanol and offer a refill plan, but LA\VIK happily burns any quality standard bioethanol you can buy locally. We recommend high-purity fuel simply because it burns cleaner and without the spirit-lamp smell.
Can I use rubbing alcohol, spirit, gel or other fuels?
No — only liquid bioethanol made for indoor fires. Substitutes can smell, soot, burn unevenly or behave unpredictably, and they fall outside what LA\VIK was tested and certified to run on.
How do I refill it safely?
Only ever fill the burner when it is completely cool and the flame is fully out. Pour to the fill line, wipe away any stray drops before lighting, and never add fuel to a warm or lit burner. It is the single most important habit — and an easy one.
How do I put it out?
Close the lid with the included snuffer to starve the flame of air — a clean, controlled shut-down. Never blow it out.
Heat & what to expect
How much warmth does it really give?
The radiant glow of roughly 30 candles for the LA\VIK, around 20 for the Studio — a soft, room-side warmth you feel when you are near it. Genuine heat, but gentle by design: never too hot to sit beside.
Can it heat a room or replace my heating?
No, and we would never claim it does. Like candlelight, it warms the space and the mood around it rather than acting as a central heat source. Honestly setting that expectation is why people are so happy with it in practice.
How many watts is it?
It is best understood by feel rather than wattage — the warmth of a cluster of candles, a gentle output suited to atmosphere. If you need exact figures for your space, our team is glad to share them.
The scent ritual
How does the fragrance work — where does the oil go?
A few drops of natural fragrance oil go onto the warm Larvikite stone beside the flame — never into the fire. The stone holds a precise warmth, exactly like the stones in a sauna, and releases the scent slowly and evenly through the room. No diffuser, no smoke, no burnt note.
Where do I get the oils, and will there be more scents?
Every fireplace ships with a fragrance sample, and full 50 ml oils are available on their own or in the discovery set — currently Nordic Pine, Warm Amber, and Sea Salt & Sage. We release new seasonal scents through the year; join the Journal list to hear first.
How long does a bottle of oil last?
A long time — two or three drops is all it takes, so a single 50 ml bottle lasts many months of evenings.
Can I use my own essential oils?
We would steer you to ours. Our oils are formulated specifically to be warmed, not burned, so they stay true and never turn acrid on hot stone; ordinary essential oils can scorch, smell off or leave residue. For the ritual to feel the way it should, the oil matters as much as the flame.
Care, cleaning & the stone
Why doesn’t it soot?
Soot is what cheap, watery fuel and open-pool burners produce. High-purity bioethanol in our woven-wick burner burns with a clean, steady flame and no black tips — so there is nothing settling on your walls, ceiling or the glass.
How often do I need to clean it, and what exactly?
Very little. Wipe the glass occasionally with a soft, slightly damp cloth to keep it clear, and empty any unused fuel from the burner after use. No ash, no soot, no sweeping — that is the point of a clean-burning flame.
Do I ever replace the Larvikite stones?
No — the Larvikite is the permanent heart of the fireplace, not a consumable. It is reusable indefinitely and only improves with the warmth of use. Should you ever want a replacement or a refresh, we can supply them.
How do I look after it long-term?
Keep it dry, wipe the glass and stone gently as needed, and store any leftover fuel sealed and upright away from heat. Treated kindly, LA\VIK is built to last years, not a season.
Sizes, specifications & what’s included
What sizes are there, and which should I choose?
Two, with an identical build and ritual. The LA\VIK (statement size, 38 × 30 cm, 14 kg, up to 3 h burn) anchors a living room. The LA\VIK Studio (compact, 26 × 20 cm, 8 kg, up to 2 h burn) suits tables, shelves and smaller rooms. Same flame, same fragrance ritual — only the scale changes.
How heavy are they?
Reassuringly so — around 14 kg for the LA\VIK and 8 kg for the Studio. That weight is deliberate: it is what keeps the fireplace planted and tip-resistant.
What materials is it made from?
Brushed or matte-black stainless steel, heat-resistant borosilicate glass, genuine Norwegian Larvikite and a fine mineral sand bed.
Is a manual included?
Yes — every fireplace ships with clear step-by-step instructions for pouring, lighting, scenting and extinguishing, plus care and safety guidance.
Is there a smaller or larger size than these two?
The LA\VIK and Studio are our full range for now. If you are unsure which fits your space, tell us the room and we will point you to the right one.
What’s in the box
What is included in the price?
Your LA\VIK arrives ready to light with everything you need to begin, including the tools to light and snuff it safely. The Set bundles the fireplace with oil and fuel to start the ritual the same evening. The exact contents are listed on each product page.
LA\VIK fireplace
The fireplace itself — a brushed-steel body around a real glass chimney that lights in seconds, with no chimney, flue or power.
Larvikite stones
Genuine Norwegian Larvikite, the blue-shimmering stone quarried near Larvik â it lines the base and scatters the flame’s light.
Mineral sand
A fine mineral bed that seats the burner and cradles the stones, keeping the flame even, level and stable.
Burner & safety cup
The stainless fuel chamber at the heart of LA\VIK, with a sealed safety cup that meters the bioethanol and prevents spills.
Extinguishing lid & lighting stick
Slide the lid across the burner to snuff the flame instantly and cleanly, guided by a long steel stick that also lights it from a safe distance.
Indoor ring
A flame-shaping ring that lowers and steadies the flame for calm, safe burning indoors.
Fragrance oil
Natural fragrance oil — a few drops on the warm Larvikite release the scent slowly into the room.
Where it comes from
Where is glør from, and where is it made?
glør is a design company rooted in the Nordic way of living, drawn from a search across Scandinavia for a material with soul. The Larvikite is quarried on the Norwegian coast near Larvik — found nowhere else on earth — and every LA\VIK is designed in-house in Europe.
Who is behind glør?
Two friends, Jan and Sven, who wanted to keep a real flame close all year round and couldn’t find one built for the homes we actually live in. So they made it.
Why Larvikite?
Because it does three things no ordinary stone does: it grounds the flame, scatters its light through a rare blue shimmer, and holds warmth to carry your fragrance. It is a 300 million-year-old piece of the Norwegian earth in your living room.
